As Jersey drove home, she felt shattered. According to Mr. Daniels, (that was his name), Gaston was no more a reality than his postal box. Daniels speculated that somehow the letters returning to her had been intercepted, but in fact she got the feeling he thought she was crazy. All he knew for certain was that he kept returned her letters, along with his own letters to her, and that she kept writing.
When Jersey reached her front door, letters overflowed the box and littered the porch. She picked one up. The grey envelope was from Gaston; more food erotica.
She had spent the drive back figuring out that Brian must be behind this, and she was furious! They'd met just after the first correspondences. He told her he had once worked as a cook. As an actor he could easily play the part of different characters on stage; his talents obviously extended to writing. He traveled a lot; buying foreign postage stamps and having rubber stamps made up to cancel them wasn't difficult. Her mailbox was outside; it would be easy enough to steal the returned letters and write replies. There was no one else it could be but she failed to see a motive. She went to his place to confront him.
Jersey climbed to the porch of the hundred-year-old Victorian house and rang the bell. The last sunlight glinted off the bay window as she peered inside. Brian's spotless stainless steel kitchen, at the front of the house, looked dark and empty.
After she tried the bell again and knocked, she turned the knob, surprised when the door opened. "Brian?"
The air was a bit stale. She walked through the kitchen to the dining room then the living room at the back. Everything was neat and orderly, the way Brian liked it. She ran a finger over the TV screen; it was coated with a fine layer of dust. Not like Brian at all.
Upstairs she checked his office, the bathroom and, the bedroom. There, something felt off. The sunlight had faded but she didn't want to turn on a light. Brian's kingsize futon had been made up with the black and grey comforter she'd helped him pick out. At first glance everything appeared normal. Then she realized what was missing. The picture of her and Brian together that he kept on his dresser was gone. Despite the anger, Jersey felt hurt.
She opened the top drawer. There it was, face down. She lifted the picture out. The glass inside the nickel frame was cracked in four places, as though it had been damaged intentionally. The drawer also contained stacks of letters, addressed to her various vampire-lover correspondents, Jersey's return address in the upper corner of the envelope.
"Find what you're looking for?"
She jumped at the sound of his voice. The picture slid from her hands and what was left of the glass shattered irrevocably. "Brian. I... The door was open."
"I've been expecting you."
He looked pale in the dim light. And angry.
"Can we turn on the light?" she asked, feeling nervous, but he didn't move.
